that are appropriate for families as they do come in all shapes and sizes. If you are interested in a smaller tent for 1-3 people, Wenzel has the following makes: Lone Elk Hiker, Sprout Kids Tent, Alpine Sport Dome Tent, and the Ridgeline Sport Dome Tent. For families of 3 or 4, the following would be good Wenzel options: Pine Ridge Sport Dome Tent and the Big Bend Family Dome Tent. For larger families, up to seven people, the Kodiak Family Cabin Dome Tent or the Great Basin Family Dome Tent would be better choices.
Let’s review each in turn to make sure you have all the facts before coming to a purchase decision.
The Pine Ridge Sport Dome Tent. This tent is 10ft by 8ft with a total area of 80 square inches. At the centre it is 60 inches high and suggests a sleep capacity of 4-5. Remember our tip from above, this tent is probably most appropriate for a parent and 2 children or 2 parents and 1 child or 2 parents and 2 small children. One great feature of the Pine Ridge Sport Dome is the hanging divider which creates two rooms inside the tent. There are also lots of openings for ventilation creating a nice breeze through the tent. The setup is straight-forward and the hooped fly protects the front and rear of the tent from rain. If you plan to hike with this tent, the weight is 11.9 pounds.
The Big Bend Family Dome Tent. This tent is slightly larger than the Pine Ridge Sport Dome just described and measures 14ft by 10ft. The total area is 94 square inches and the height at the centre is 68 inches. This is a bit roomier but keep in mind that this one is a hexagonal shape which makes some of this extra space awkward to use. I do not typically camp with an air mattress or a cot but I’ve heard that these may not fit into the shape of this tent. So, if you like these comforts while camping, make sure you know the dimensions and check that they will fit before purchasing this model. The sleeping capacity on the Big Bend Family Dome Tent suggests five, but based on our suggestion, I would not expect to fit more than four comfortably. Similar to the Pine Ridge Sport Dome, the Big Bend Family Dome also has a hanging divider and lots of air. The setup is also very straight-forward and easy to do.
Now on to the larger family tents! The Kodiak Family Cabin Dome Tent. This one is better for larger families and would comfortably sleep six, maybe seven. The body of the tent is 14ft by 14ft, and has a total area of 162 square inches. The height at the centre is 86 inches which means everyone can stand. In fact, the straight walls of this tent make it appear more like a cabin than a traditional camping tent. A full fly covers the entire thing and therefore provides great protection against the elements. There are also lots of windows allowing for good airflow. This tent is not difficult to setup but keep the size in mind, setup will be easier with a helping hand or two.
The last of the Wenzel family line is the Great Basin Family Dome Tent. This one is very much like the Pine Ridge Sport Dome Tent but bigger! This tent has a sleep capacity for as many as seven family members with a total area of 159 square inches. The main body is 18ft by 10ft and has a comfortable centre height of 76 inches. This model also features the hanging divider giving the effect of two rooms and also has the hooped fly for great weather protection. Setup is easy with a pin/ring system but again, if you have your whole family tagging along, grab one or two of them to help you with the setup!
